Welcome to the first blog in the new and revamped Roots to Connection website. I hope you love the hard work that went into making this a modern-day approach to wellbeing and life in general.
Have you ever felt you have given so much of yourself to others that you have lost touch with who you really are? Perhaps a difficult relationship, a painful experience or years of putting others first have left you feeling emotionally drained. You may feel scared to change things because the guilt of saying ‘no’ feels overwhelming.
In spiritual practice, energy retrieval is a ritual designed to help you reconnect with yourself, release the emotional weight of the past and bring your attention back to the present. It is about recognising your worth, rebuilding confidence and making space for your own needs.
What Is Energy Retrieval?
Energy retrieval is based on the spiritual idea that difficult experiences, emotional attachments, and past disappointments can scatter parts of our personal energy. Even general things like getting stuck in traffic, being cut off after holding for ages with a big organisation, and just dealing with people! All sap our energy.
You might think of it as a symbolic way to gather yourself again. Instead of letting past events dominate your thoughts, you consciously choose to focus on your strength, wisdom, and future.
How to Perform an Energy Retrieval Ritual
You will need a quiet space, a crystal if you wish, and a few moments of uninterrupted time. A candle is optional. It doesn't take long, and my ideal time is lying in bed at night, warm and comfortable, delighting in knowing the energy I may have wasted will soon flow back. If practising in bed or when sleepy, use an LED candle or skip the candle entirely.
Step One: Create Your Space
If using a candle, choose an LED candle for bedtime. If lighting a real candle, place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface, well away from bedding and fabrics, and remain awake and present.
Sit comfortably. Take a few slow, natural breaths and allow yourself to become present.
Step Two: Reflect
Think gently about where you have been giving too much of your time and attention. Are there old worries, disappointments, or relationships that still occupy your thoughts? Has the pressure of work, people, and even worrying about bills been constantly on your mind?
Acknowledge these experiences without judging yourself.
Step Three: Visualise Your Energy Returning
Close your eyes and imagine a warm golden light surrounding you. Visualise this light representing your confidence, courage, creativity and personal strength, bringing your attention back to yourself.
Repeat these words:
“I call my energy and attention back to myself. I release what I am ready to leave behind and welcome my confidence, strength and wisdom. I honour my past and choose to move forward with greater peace.”
I find it helpful to imagine they are strands of light, airy and wispy, flowing back to you. Even beckoning them back. You can adapt the words to fit what feels comfortable for you.
Step Four: Release and Reconnect
Ask yourself what you are ready to change. Perhaps you need stronger boundaries, more time for yourself or the courage to let go of expectations that no longer serve you.
Choose one small, practical action that will support your wellbeing.
Step Five: Close the Ritual
Take a few comfortable breaths and bring your awareness back to the room. Thank yourself for taking this time and safely extinguish your candle if you lit one.
Crystals for Energy Retrieval
You may wish to include crystals that symbolise the qualities you want to nurture. We have a great crystal section on this website.
- Smoky quartz: Grounding and stability.
- Amethyst: Reflection and spiritual awareness.
- Rose quartz: Self-love and compassion.
- Black obsidian: Introspection and personal insight.
- Clear quartz: Clarity and intention.
Choose a crystal that feels meaningful to you or perform the ritual without one. Crystals can serve as symbolic reminders of your intentions; no established scientific evidence shows they retrieve literal energy.
Bringing Your Energy Back into Everyday Life
The real value of energy retrieval lies in what you do afterwards. Give yourself permission to rest, say no when necessary, pursue your interests and stop seeking approval from people who do not recognise your worth.
You cannot change the past, but you can choose how much attention it receives in your present.
Energy retrieval can gently remind you that caring for yourself is not selfish. It is an important part of living a balanced life.
Sometimes reclaiming your energy is simply about returning to the person you were always meant to be: yourself.
